YouView software update adds surround-sound, faster boot times and grouped recording

Rocking a YouView box. You'll shortly be in line for a software bump that'll give you a few handy tweaks. The update will speed up the device's boot-from-standby time, let you group recordings by series so you can watch 'em box-set style and pump out surround-sound audio if you've got the right gear. It'll also provide a few useful UI tweaks, like offering the option to hide BBC red button prompts, letting you roll live TV backwards by 15 seconds or forwards by 60 seconds.

With the official launch of Windows 8 comes the official support of premium cable content via one of the various CableCARD tuners originally designed for Windows 7 Media Center. Silicon Dust is at the front of the pack as Media Center on Windows 8 is already officially supported and the documentation is available for both the HDHomeRun Prime as well as the ATSC or QAM HDHomeRun. The only feature we noticed was not supported for now, is WMC Sync.

Google Play carrier billing goes live for impulse buyers on Verizon

Google Play carrier billing goes live for impulse buyers on Verizon

Google gave the broadest of targets when it said Google Play carrier billing would reach Verizon in the "coming weeks" - those last two words are often hints from companies that we shouldn't hold our breath. Call us surprised, then, when Google quietly takes the option live two weeks later. At least one Droid-Life reader has discovered that it's now possible to load as many as $25 in purchases per month on an existing Big Red smartphone bill and pay through just the one channel. The move puts all four major US carriers on the same page, and gives Verizon subscribers an incentive to splurge on apps and movies for that new Droid RAZR HD.

OUYA upgrades to Jelly Bean, gives early hardware details to game developers

If you were one of the many who funded OUYA and have been sitting on pins and needles waiting for tangible progress updates, you just received them in spades. The fledgling console builder is on track with its Engineering Verification Test phase (you're looking at a board sample here) and should not only deliver the initial developer kits in December, but include a pleasant surprise in the process - the Android-based platform will be built around Jelly Bean rather than the originally promised Ice Cream Sandwich. Programmers who just have to start right away have likewise been given a head start on hardware expectations.

Ford has a new livery for its racing efforts. The automaker has officially chosen an offset black and blue stripe as its family colors. The paint scheme officially debuted on the new 2013 Ford Fusion headed to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, but the automaker says we can expect to see it crop up in every corner of the company's racing program. That includes on the NASCAR Mustang, the NHRA Mustang Funny Car, Grand-Am Focus ST-R, the Rally America Fiesta, the BITD off-road F-150, the CTCC Focus and the V8 Supercar Falcon in Australia.

Windows 8 Pro upgrade for just $15?

Windows 8 Pro upgrade for just $15?

You know what they say, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. It seems, however, that you are able to take advantage of a loophole in the official Windows Upgrade Offer site to purchase Windows 8 Pro for just $15, never mind you purchased a Windows 7 PC before June 2nd of this year, while informing Microsoft otherwise. This has been tried and tested by some who have said that it works – basically, anyone is able to pick up Windows 8 at Microsoft's promotional price, where it was originally meant for late Windows 7 adopters only.

Learn where the top bacterial hot spots are in your car

Engineers from the Ford Research and Innovation Center have been working with the University of Michigan to find the grimiest bits inside your car and their results are, well, not all that surprising. Turns out, the most microbe-infested parts of our cars' interiors are the same spots we touch the most. The team took samples from 10 locations in employees' cars including steering wheels, radio buttons, shift knobs, and window switches. "Our findings suggest car interiors are complex ecosystems that house trillions of diverse microorganisms interacting with each other, with humans, and with their environment," says Dr.

Mazda teases SEMA-bound CX-5s

Mazda is getting into the SEMA Show spirit by teasing us with a trio of concepts based on the 2013 CX-5, all of which were hatched at the automaker's design studio in Irvine, California. Looking at the renderings, there is nothing over-the-top about any of these crossovers, but what we do see here is our long-awaited first look at a diesel-powered CX-5. The CX-5 Dempsey uses Mazda's new Skyactiv-D diesel engine paired with all-wheel drive. As for the show aspect of this concept, it is obviously named after actor Patrick Dempsey who not only races a Mazda RX-8 in Grand-Am, but apparently he is also an avid cyclist.

Ford up $1.6B in Q3 thanks to record profits in North America

Now that the bell has rung to signal the end of Q3 2012, Ford is standing in the ring with both hands in the air like Rocky: The company's overall profit of $1.63 billion for the last three months is nearly equal to its entire 2011 total of $1.94B. Those numbers come thank to the record-breaking pretax operating profit in North America of $2.33B on revenues of $19.5B, the third straight quarter that The Blue Oval has crossed the two-billion mark. Customers are paying more, on average, for Ford vehicles, another contributor to the company maintaining double-digit profit margins on its products. True, there are a couple of bruises.

This is a critical launch for Microsoft because Windows Phone 8 uses the unified Windows 8 code – this is a first on a mobile platform.  Microsoft has unveiled new features and apps, like a new Skype and Pandora for Windows 8, which will come with one year of free music, without ads.
Talking about Skype, Microsoft did say in the past that it would be very well integrated to the OS and be somewhat transparent when sending/receiving calls.

IDC: Samsung and Apple still kings of the smartphone market, Nokia loses top five spot to RIM

IDC's third quarter figures are in, complete with a few unexpected shake-ups. The entire cellphone market grew 2.4% over the same time last year, but smartphones drove the majority of that, showing growth of 45.3% and beating the analysts' expectations. Of the 179.7 million smartphones shipped, Samsung and Apple devices accounted for almost half of them, with the companies retaining their number one and two positions in the market, respectively. IDC notes that iPhone shipments didn't increase, but this is somewhat expected given the latest iteration was released only a short time before the end of the quarter.

Official–And Unofficial–Third-Party Lightning Cables Coming Soon

We've been tracking third-party Lightning cables pretty closely, because millions of people are receiving new iDevices and want a second charger.  We've seen the “authentication” chip cracked, and we saw a third-party cable that lights up, but none of them have beaten's Apple's $20 asking price for a Lightning cable. Until now. iPhone5Mod, the same people behind that light-up dock we covered earlier, have released more boring, straightforward Lightning cables–plus they're significantly less expensive than Apple's version.

Google delivers search app for Windows 8 with a touch of tablet optimization

It's not a finished, Windows 8-tuned Chrome build, but we'll take it. Much as Google has been catering to iOS users who don't have its search completely baked into the platform, there's now a dedicated Google Search app for the Metro-inclined. Ignore the desktop OS foundation; the Windows 8 app is much closer to the touchscreen-oriented mobile version with its oversized search box, service shortcuts, an emphasis on voice recognition and finger-friendly instant previews of the results.
