Honda integrating Siri into select models

Honda has partnered up with Apple to bring Siri to the Accord, Acura RDX and ILX. Owners who have an iPhone running iOS 6 will be able to ask the software to perform a number of tasks via voice command using the vehicle's on board microphone and speaker systems. What's more, the tech will put the iPhone into an "eyes free" mode, which turns the screen off to help reduce distraction while driving. Honda says it has reworked its Bluetooth and HandsFreeLink systems to accommodate the Siri functionality.

2013 Mitsubishi Outlander GT

2013 Mitsubishi Outlander GT

I'm not a gambling man, but if there were a pool for an automotive death watch, my money would be on Mitsubishi. Lincoln is a close second. To understand the plight of Mitsubishi, you only have to look at its current lineup; they all just look, feel and drive about 10 years older than they really are. With the departure of the Endeavor and merciful killing of the Eclipse (the Galant lives on, but is on hiatus for the 2013 model year), one of the worst remaining offenders is the Mitsubishi Outlander, which I recently drove in top-level GT trim for this Quick Spin.

“Budget iPhone 5″ Geared for China?

“Budget iPhone 5″ Geared for China?

Rumors about the cheap version of iPhone 5 just won't die down. Despite what an Apple executive has said about how cheap smartphones will never be the future of Apple's products, sources claim that a budget iPhone 5 is indeed in the works. Citing “reliable sources,” Jeremy Horwitz of iLounge reports that Apple will replace the aluminum body of its latest smartphone with a cheaper plastic casing. He adds that the cheaper version of iPhone 5 would have a Retina display, as well as a Lightning connector.

There is a catch, though.

Hybrids outsell many market segments in 2012, still struggling

2012 was a rocking year for hybrid vehicle sales here in the US, and Ward's Auto has written up an interesting piece that breaks some of the sales data down. The number-crunchers have tallied, for instance, that the 427,605 hybrids sold in 2012 is a 64-percent increase on the 261,507 sold in 2011. Those numbers are big enough to beat out whole other mainstream segment sales, says Ward's, including midsize luxury cars, small crossovers/utility vehicles, and three separate SUV segments.

Two weeks and 2,000 miles in Ferrari's FF with Evo

EVO's Harry Metcalfe had some questions about the day-to-day livability of the Ferrari FF. When he brought those questions up to Ferrari, they suggested he take one for a couple of weeks and try it out for, as he calls them, "mundane duties." The image above is Metcalfe pointing to the 660-horsepower, all-wheel drive FF parked in one of his fields because, since he lives on a farm, mucking about the green is part of his daily routine. "It could use more ground clearance," he says, "but that's an option on this car.". He does get it on the "tarmac" and he likes it even more there than in the mud.

How social media is changing the way car defects and complaints are discovered

Social media can allow direct and faster access to a person, a group or discussion of an issue, and that has led to wide ranging players in the automotive world figuring out how to use it in order to improve performance. Dealers encourage customers to use sites like Google+ and DealerRater.com for reviews, automakers like Hyundai and Chrysler have someone dedicated to watching Twitter for complaints, and federal agencies like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration survey forums and websites for hints about possible defects.

Dizmio – This is a Kickstarter project which is seeking $15,000 in funding. The Dizmio is made of 2 anodized aluminum plates that are held together with a wide elastic band. This style of “wallet” is a current trend in minimalist wallet tech which make me scratch my head and ask why… I just don't get it.

Kensington KeyFolio Pro 2 removable keyboard, case, and stand for iPad 2, 3rd-gen, and 4th-gen iPad review

I've reviewed a lot of Bluetooth keyboard cases for iPads, and most of them have the keyboard permanently attached inside the case.  You're stuck with carrying the extra weight of the keyboard, even when you know you won't be using it, and you're also stuck with always using the keyboard and the iPad within inches of each other with those cases.  The KeyFolio Pro 2 case from Kensington has a removable keyboard, which means you can move the keyboard closer to you for arm and back comfort, or you can set the iPad on something to lift it closer to your eye level.  The KeyFolio Pro 2 is designed for the iPad 2 and the 3rd- and 4th-gen iPad.

Google Experiments on Using Hardware for Passwords

With so many online services requiring passwords, it can be quite difficult to manage your secret codes especially if you prefer using a different password for each website. Google wants to put an end to it. The tech giant, represented by vice president of security Eric Grosse and engineer Mayank Upadhyay, outlined their proposal to develop a hardware that would act as a master key for all online services. The report, which was published in this month's issue of IEEE Security and Privacy magazine, said that Google's engineers have been experimenting on creating that master key.
