US Senators Urge Trade Representative To Think About Repercussions Of ITC Ban On iPhones And iPads

US Senators Urge Trade Representative To Think About Repercussions Of ITC Ban On iPhones And iPads

Samsung and Apple have been at each other's throats for a long time now, and both sides have won some cases, and lost some, and in Apple's case, the Cupertino company's older lineup of products such as the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, and the iPad 2 3G will be facing a ban in the US, ultimately preventing the device from being sold legally. This is due to the findings of the court who came to the conclusion that Apple infringed upon declared standard-essential patents owned by Samsung and is expected to go into effect come 5th of August, but it looks like there are a handful of US senators who believe that the ITC should reconsider this move.

Samsung Releases Exclusive Apps For Its Windows Phone Devices

Samsung Releases Exclusive Apps For Its Windows Phone Devices

One of the ways Windows Phone manufacturers separate themselves from the rest of the herd is by offering up exclusive apps which are only available for a particular manufacturer's device. Given that Windows Phone hardware is pretty much the same across the board, with some minor differences and features, like Nokia focusing on camera specs, or a different design, it can be hard to choose a brand to go with. Well the good news for Samsung fans is that if you were looking for a reason to get a Samsung Windows Phone handset, like the ATIV S or the ATIV S Neo, Samsung has released two exclusive apps: MangaCamera and Paper Artist.

Amazon's new Kindle Fire HD tablets to come with Snapdragon 800 CPUs, high-res displays

A couple of weeks ago, we brought you the first leaked details about Amazon's new Kindle Fire tablets that are due out before the end of the year. Today we have purported specs to talk about, too. It looks like the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD will come with 1,920×1,200 resolution (just like the new Nexus 7, and rumored before), and a 2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset. The exact frequency at which the CPU will be clocked may change. It's very interesting to see Amazon use what is essentially Qualcomm's best (and most expensive) chip at the moment.

Man beats ticket on dashcam evidence, takes town to court [w/videos]

Rod MacIver wanted justice after being wronged by his local police department. He was pulled over and cited for running a red light, despite the officer's dashcam video clearly shown that he hadn't. When the matter went to court, the judge, after viewing the footage, threw the case out and dressed down the officer, Jason Lawton. MacIver isn't through, though, taking the matter to small claims court over the time and effort involved in beating his original ticket.

Ford blamed in drug mule lawsuit

If a college student is caught smuggling drugs across the border, one might think the kid got what was coming to him. But when a Mexican student at the University of Texas in El Paso was caught by Border Patrol agents with duffel bags filled with marijuana in his trunk, the man used a classic excuse: He claimed they weren't his. While a claim like that is almost unbelievable, Ricardo Magallanes, the student, is now suing Ford for handling its vehicles' key codes negligently enough to allow drug smugglers to break into his Ford Focus and stash the drugs, The Daily Caller reports.

It got a serious image boost with Nexus 4 for Google, and further enhanced the reputation by a well designed flagships -Optimus G and G Pro. At the same time, LG's well positioned mid to low end Optimus L series delivered the necessary unit volumes to get the Korean handset maker a #3 spot among smartphone OEMs.

But one bottleneck was still slowing LG's growth. Distribution and manufacturing.

For some reason LG was very slow with the global roll-outs of their flagships. Optimus G Pro, for example, was launched in April in Korea and in the U.S. in May.

Toyota reaffirms commitment to body-on-frame SUVs

Toyota sold 121,055 Highlander CUVs in 2012, according to Automotive News. By comparison, it sold 78,457 examples of four different body-on-frame, truck-based SUVs (4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Sequoia and Land Cruiser). One could argue then, that the traditional SUVs aren't pulling their weight from a sales perspective. Yet that isn't stopping Toyota from reaffirming its commitment to a segment that has seen its former champions – Ford, General Motors and Chrysler – abandon it with alarming speed. Ford and GM still offer body-on frame utilities, but only in the very largest offerings, catering to seven or even eight passengers.

Despite the best efforts of Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, LG and others, most of the televisions in people's homes these days are not of the smart variety. However, there are hundreds of millions of regular televisions packing HDMI ports, and Google's new Chromecast device offers a way to put some brains into those dumb TVs by giving them access to web-based content. Having a Chromecast dongle connected to your TV means you can stream videos straight from a Google Play, Netflix or YouTube app, or mirror the content in any open tab in Google's Chrome browser using a tab casting feature.

The flurry of Mk VII Golf GTD television ads by Volkswagen, which range from funny to hilarious, just make us want one that much more. The focus of these 30-second commercials is on the torque-rich performance of the hatchback's turbocharged 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine, which has a stump-thumping 280 pound-feet of torque on hand. That's enough torque for some harmless mischief, if you're to believe the commercials, and, paired with 184 horsepower, enough for the oil-burning Golf performance model to go from 0-62 miles per hour in about 7.5 seconds.

As noted during the announcement, the dongle itself is a mere two inches long, with a bulbous circular end opposite the necessary HDMI port. It's got white Chrome Branding printed on one side and the requisite FCC info on the other. While we take no issue with the shape itself, we're concerned that flared-out end might take up the space of two HDMI ports despite it needing only one to operate. Regardless, it's a solid little thing, constructed of black plastic and jammed with the 2.4Ghz wireless radio needed to talk with tablets and phones.

There's no denying the fact that the global smartphone market is captured by the duopoly of Samsung and Apple. The former releases a handful of devices each year, from low-end entry level smartphones to big phablets such as the Mega 6.3. Apple on the other hand releases one iPhone each year, and continues to sell the previous generation models at a lower price. TrendForce, a market research firm, estimates that in Q2 2013, iPhone sales were left far behind by Samsung smartphone. Apple sold an estimated 27 million iPhones in this period, whereas Samsung is estimated to have sold a staggering 71 million units in just one quarter.

BMW, Mini aim to sell million cars off new FWD platform

BMW, Mini aim to sell million cars off new FWD platform

Mini sold 301,526 cars in 2012; BMW sold 1.54 million of its own models. According to a piece in Autocar, analysts say the coming UKL1 platform that will form the skeleton of the third-generation Mini Cooper and coming front-wheel drive BMW 1 Series could be responsible for "more than 900,000 cars per year" all by itself. That sale fire is fueled by the UKL1 wearing up to twenty-three bodies in total between the two brands, 11 for Mini and 12 for BMW, rendering hatchbacks, sedans, coupes, convertibles, wagons, crossovers and people-haulers from about 12.5 feet to 14.5 feet.

Electric Federal has taken a fresh look back at the enduring legacy of original Mini with a video interview with Heritage Garage's Graham Reid, one of the foremost experts on classic Minis. As Electric Federal points out, it's important to remember that the Mini did not start out as a performance car. It was built in response to the Suez Canal crisis of the mid-50s, which had a similar effect on British gas prices as OPEC did on American prices in the 1970s – rationing and rapid price jumps. Through the years, Minis have grown from their budget roots to become seriously competent performance machines.

Belkin WeMo Smart Home Automation Switch review

Belkin WeMo Smart Home Automation Switch review

I have some OCD tendencies that are under control now for the most part, but I still freak out about leaving the house unattended for any length of time.  I don't mean I have agoraphobia, but I'm afraid someone will break into the house while I'm out, even for a few hours.  We don't have a lot of crime in our area, but that doesn't stop my worrying.  I've thought about adding some sort of automatic controls to the lights in my house to give it an always-occupied look, but those old fashioned timers are so predictable that they don't fool anyone after a while, and I don't have the skills to wire in more sophisticated automation devices.
