There we were, thinking touch-based versions of gaming classics were a bad idea on a device intended for gaming - and then we saw Sonic the Hedgehog 2running on a Nook Simple Touch. YouTube user "ndncnbvcuyuys" rooted his touch-based Barnes & Noble e-reader, installed the Android 2.1 OS on it, and hooked up a Sega Genesis emulator. The results are not what we'd call "ideal," but as the hacker says, "It is playable." Sure, technically speaking, the on-screen virtual buttons allow interaction with Sonic and his buddy Tails, but whether it's any fun at all is another question altogether.

Microsoft details Office for Windows RT: shipping on devices as a preview release, upgrade coming later

For all the explaining that Microsoft has done, there's still a fair bit that's not clear about what Windows RT will actually look like when it ships next month. The company has filled in one of those gaps today, though, detailing what it hopes will be one of the operating system's big selling points: Office for Windows RT. Perhaps the biggest news is Microsoft's confirmation of earlier reports that the productivity suite will actually ship as a preview release on Windows RT devices, with a free upgrade to the final version promised between early November and January depending on the language.

It reportedly took Pole Performance Nevers Magny-Cours just six months to develop this electric race car before it set an official record on the Grand Prix track at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours in France. Known as the NOAO, which is supposedly pronounced "Know How," this car boasts twin electric motors capable of pushing out 227 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

. iPhone developers may not have had much time to update their apps for the iPhone 5′s larger screen, but that hasn't posed a problem for Netflix (NFLX), which on Thursday released an updated version of its iOS app designed specifically to deliver video to the new iPhone's four-inch display.

Sony Xperia T available in Europe now

Initially expected to be released in the UK in early September, the Sony Xperia T has only now made its debut there. The Carphone Warehouse is offering the Xperia T for free on plans starting at £26 (you can choose contracts on O2, Orange, or Vodafone). The handset isn't available on PAYG or SIM-free yet. A special edition of the Xperia T, called The Bond Phone, will be offered directly by O2 UK soon.

UK aside, you can also buy the new Xperia in Germany (via O2), and France (via Orange).

Sony PS3 supported until 2015 at least

Sony has reassured the gaming industry that they fully intend to stick to their plan for a 10 year lifecycle for the PS3 console, having recently introduced a slimmer model at the recently concluded Tokyo Game Show. This means those who are late to the game need not fret that the next console (a PS3 in this context) they purchase will not be obsolete in a year's time, or two. After all, there were whispers going around that Sony fully intends to roll out a new PlayStation console in time for the holiday season next year, which means it would not make much sense to purchase a new PS3 at this point in time.

Samsung (005930) late last week alleged that jurors in the Apple (AAPL) patent case had improperly relied upon outside information not presented during the trial, thus invalidating the jury's $1 billion verdict and necessitating a new trial. CNET reports that Samsung's allegations revolve around jury foreman Velvin Hogan, who said in interviews after the trial that he had used his expertise in patents to guide his fellow jurors' decisions on what constituted prior art in intellectual property cases.

It seems that the Google Now servers were knocked out of commission for a while today, although things are back to normal even as you read this. There was initial confusion for those who were using devices that ran on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, as it affected the main Gmail account as well, meaning you are unable to hook up to Google Now to boot. During the downtime, it seemed that Google accounts which were not hooked up to Google Now in any way were not affected (which is only natural).

According to the official announcement, the Nintendo Wii U is expected to make its way to Europe come 30th of November which is a good 12 days after the US gets it. Well if you're living in Europe and you wished that the console would release earlier, you might get your wish thanks to an ad which has revealed that the Wii U will be released on the 23rd of November instead. Oddly enough, these ads only appear for those who do not have Flash enabled in their browsers, but turning Flash back on will revert the ad back to the 30th of November date.

Braven 600 Portable Bluetooth Speaker Review

I am quickly becoming a fan of portable audio speakers and docks. They are convenient and sometimes sound way better than their size would indicate. Last year, I reviewed the wonderful Soundmatters FoxL speaker which impressed everyone who heard it with its jaw-dropping sound. Later Jawbone released the Jambox, which is basically a reworked FoxL in a much prettier case. There was also a company named Spar which made a beautiful, aluminum-wrapped speaker, the Zephyr. Spar (now Braven) has replaced the Zephyr with three new speaker models, the Braven 600, 625s and 650.

During the 10th Annual "Streetfighterz Ride of the Century," police and highway patrol near St. Louis, Missouri attempted to contain that gaggle of road-hogging motorcyclists when things get really out of hand. If you can't wait until next year to see the future for RIM, N4BBhas obtained what it claims is a picture on the BlackBerry 10 L-Series, aka London. The screenshot shows a launcher pane full of app icons including BBM, Facebook, Maps and StoryMaker, which could be an iMovie-style video editor. Other leaks, including one from a video posted by BlackberryItalia.it (embedded after the break), indicate it could pack a removable 1800mAh LS1 battery and will be gunmetal colored.

Earlier we reported that Samsung had begun rolling out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to international Samsung Galaxy S3 handsets in Poland, with other countries and regions expected to follow shortly. Well it seems that the Galaxy S3 will not be the only device on the receiving end of Android 4.1 and according to Samsung, there are a ton of other Samsung products that are set to receive the Android 4.1 update as well. When exactly will the updates arrive remains to be seen, but if you see your device listed below then we guess it'll just be a matter of time.

Verizon has no plans to re-lock iPhone 5's GSM and 3G sides

When we learned that Verizon wouldn't lock the GSM-related components of the iPhone 5, we were waiting for a "gotcha" moment. Surely the carrier would clamp down and steer us back towards its more expensive roaming plans, right. Not according to Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney: she says there's no plans to lock Apple's handset at a later point. In other words, you should be free to use a Verizon-locked iPhone 5 on any compatible GSM and HSPA+ networks for as long as you'd like, including with AT&T and Canadian carriers.

If you've been paying attention, you know the quantum computing revolution is coming - and so far the world has a mini quantum network, not to mention the $10,000 D-Wave One, to show for it. Researchers from the University of Melbourne and University College, London, have now developed the "first working quantum bit based on a single atom of silicon." By measuring and manipulating the magnetic orientation, or spin, of an electron bound to a phosphorus atom embedded in a silicon chip, the scientists were able to both read and write information, forming a qubit, the basic unit of data for quantum computing.

. Shocking no one, Apple (AAPL) announced on Monday that its brand new iPhone 5 smartphone set a new record for opening-weekend sales. The company confirmed that during the device's first three days of availability, Apple and its retail partners managed to sell more than 5 million iPhone 5 handsets including preorders. Apple also said more than 100 million iOS device owners updated to iOS 6 since the new OS was released last week.

The new iPhone launched Friday, September 21st following heavy demand that saw launch-day preorder inventory sell out in less than one hour at Apple.com.

After emitting an appropriate number of yawns and groans, staff at the federal court in San Jose have accepted a document from Samsung's lawyers stating that the manufacturer "anticipates" adding the iPhone 5 to its list of ongoing patent grievances against Apple. Original Motorola DROID made relevant again with unofficial Jelly Bean update [video]

. The phone that helped put Android on the map has long been forgotten by Google (GOOG) and Verizon (VZ). Loyal hackers, however, have kept the iconic Motorola DROID alive and relevant even as it nears its third birthday. An XDA-Developers forum member on Saturday released an alpha Jelly Bean ROM for the device and early reports suggest it is rather stable despite the fact that the Motorola DROID is equipped with a 550MHz single-core processor and 256MB of RAM, falling short of Jelly Bean's minimum requirements. Earlier this month, developers were able to port Android 4.1 to Google's first smartphone, the T-Mobile G1.

Hate iOS 6 Maps? Apple says they will improve it over time

I think it's safe to say that I'm not the only one who's annoyed by Apples Maps app on its iOS 6. Apart from the lack of support for countries like Malaysia - no live traffic, no 3D, under populated database - even in the U.S., the new Maps has its limitations like the lack of navigation for public transportation, misplaced landmarks, geographical oddities and such. Realizing this, Apple recently told All Things D that it is expecting things to improve as more people use Maps.
Customers around the world are upgrading to iOS 6 with over 200 new features including Apple Maps, our first map service.

Microsoft Office 2013 and Office 365 priced

There is no exact release date as to when Microsoft will roll out Office 2013 and Office 365 worldwide, but at the very least, we are able to get a handle on the price point. Standalone versions that have been licensed for use on just one computer will still be sold over the counter, but Microsoft's new price points want to make experiencing Office 2013 and Office 365 at home and at the office a far more affordable one through a subscription package model instead.

Lenovo axes Android App Shop, points you in the direction of Google Play

Business-types, Lenovo pondered, needed their own App Store Shop, dedicated to selling business-only applications to those strutting around looking serious in their polyester suits. It seems that such demand never materialized, however, with the company shuttering the outlet only six months after its launch and pointing users in the direction of Google Play instead. We do know that the PS Vita from Sony is a unique portable gaming console, considering how it comes with a control scheme that is slightly different from the rest while still maintaining a traditional gaming set up. Well, Apple might have taken an envious look at the PS Vita, having applied for a new patent which points towards a possible future of the iPad that will boast of backside controls, specifically meant to help you enjoy video games in a totally new way. Needless to say, the sensor-based controls are positioned right under the iPad's surface so that it does not resemble the physical buttons of yore.

Nokia Lauta RM-742 prototype leaked

Just a couple of days ago, we saw the Nokia RM-581 Columbus prototype that never made it to the market released, and here is a leak of the N9 successor that was given the codename "Lauta". Meant to roll out right after the Nokia N9 was launched, it seemed that the Nokia Luta RM-742 never made it. It seems that the Lauta shared similar hardware specifications (as well as design, as you can see above) to the N9, although the main difference would be a full QWERTY keyboard. There is a black and magenta combo colored version of the Nokia Lauta as well, but as with the Columbus, this is also a prototype.

Windows Phone 8X coming to AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile in November

We just had a chance to see and handle the colorful Windows Phone 8X by HTC, but where will we find it in the US. On stage, the company told us that the new device will be heading to three major carriers: AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. All three operators should be pushing the device out sometime in November, though we're still waiting to hear specifics on pricing - and we also haven't been told details on the availability of the lower-end Windows Phone 8S.

Hackers show the world how to steal an iPhone's pictures, address book and browser history

Hackers at the Mobile Pwn2Own hacking competition in Amsterdam this week have uncovered a security flaw that allows attackers to swipe iPhone users' pictures, address books and browser histories from their phones. TechWorld reports that the hackers created a Webkit browser exploit that circumvents Safari's security protocols if a user happens to be on a page where the malicious code is running. The hackers told TechWorld that the browser exploit “works on iOS 5.1.1 and the developer release of iOS 6, and probably also works on the iPhone 5,” so it's not as though upgrading to the new iPhone will deliver instant protection.
