Toyota smashes EV record on Nurburgring, speed rivals gas-powered cars (video)

Last week, Toyota's racing team set out to break the current EV record on the Nordschleife track, part of Germany's infamous Nürburgring - and they've done it, clocking a swift 7:47.79 seconds with the P001 electric racing car. The Peugeot EX1 EV's previous 9:01.338 record seems like a distant memory as the new contender shaved more than a minute off the time, giving even gasoline-powered vehicles a run for their money. Toyota's car is no slouch as it can reach 260km/h (174mph), with a track time that rivals the Radical SR8 LM's record breaking time of 6:48.

Sony Reader Wi-Fi

In addition to its tablets, Sony is launching its new elegant Reader Wi-Fi that features a 6-inch e-ink Pearl V220 glare-free touch screen display which gives access to over 2 millions titles from the Sony Reader Store. The company partnered with over 11,000 public libraries across the country to allow users to wirelessly borrow e-books from their local library. The Sony Reader Wi-Fi now offers pinch and zoom and the ability to set the cover of the book you are currently reading as the screen saver.

Today, Sony is launching an interesting small form factor dual-screen tablet, the Sony Tablet P. We published about the device back in July when it was still code-named "S2". The P features two 5.5" high quality TruBlack capacitive touch screen displays with vibrant colors and high contrasts. The compact size and the elegant clamshell form factor allows users to easily carry it in their (large) pockets.

Smartphone App Predicts Incoming Traffic Light

Researchers from MIT and Princeton have collaborated and come up with a smartphone application that can predict whether the incoming traffic light would be red, green, or yellow once the driver reaches it. The SignalGuru app works by mounting the smartphone onto the car's dashboard. Then, the app captures images of traffic lights, which are analyzed based on the lights it flashed. Finally, the data is passed along to other nearby SignalGuru users.
The app can inform the driver how quickly he or she should drive to get through the next intersection.

WikiLeaks hacked, website crashed

The WikiLeaks website did happen to crash on Tuesday in what seemed to be a hacking attempt, coming after the accelerated publication of tens of thousands of once-secret State Department cables raised fresh concerns surrounding the exposure of confidential US embassy sources. According to WikiLeaks, “WikiLeaks.org is presently under attack” where an hour later, the site and the cables posted there could no longer be accessed. WikiLeaks of course turned to their Twitter account, while directing its followers to look for cables on a mirror site or a separate search system – cablegatesearch.net.

AT&T to finally launch LG Thrill 4G on September 4th, $99.99

AT&T is finally set to launch its first 3D smartphone, the LG Thrill 4G. No, that 4G doesn't mean users will be able to take advantage of AT&T's soft launched 4G LTE network, but the Thrill will begin burning up AT&T's previous-generation fourth-generation network when it becomes available for purchase this Sunday, September 4th. We reviewed the LG Thrill 4G last month and we were a little surprised by the fact that we really did enjoy recording and viewing 3D content on the device.

A support page for the Samsung GT-I9250 was discovered today on Samsung’s site. Just in case you’re getting mixed up with all these model numbers the GT-I9250 was originally rumored to be Samsung’s Nexus Prime device after a leaked roadmap showed the device with a 720p HD screen and running Android Ice Cream Sandwich. All that kinda went to hades once BGR leaked their “insider info” on a potential Droid Prime release this year with the model number SCH-I515 and heading to Verizon.

iTunes Match Gets Dev Release, Video Preview

The wait for an Apple-centric solution to cloud-based music streaming is almost over. Apple released iTunes Match to those enrolled in its developer program. Today's announcement included a short video tour of the service, which is available only to those who are running iOS 10.5 Beta 6.1 and were quick enough to grab one of few beta subscriptions Apple offered.
iTunes Match works in conjunction with Apple iCloud, which allows users to store iTunes playlists remotely. With iTunes Match, you don't have to store music files on your iDevice; they're simply streamed from the cloud.

Next Duke Nukem game to be better and revealed soon

However, props should be given to them for actually finishing the game and pushing it out to the masses instead of passing up on it like the game's previous developers did. In addition to hinting about a new Duke Nukem game from Gearbox that's on the way, Pitchford also announced that DLC (downloadable content) for DNF is arriving soon, which should please fans of Duke Nukem. Can the company behind successful first-person shooters like Borderlands and Brothers in Arms make Duke reclaim the throne. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Elgato EyeTV Mobile dongle brings live TV to the iPad 2

Sure, Elgato already has an app that lets you stream TV to your iPad - but that's only if they're being broadcast online. To pull in live TV over the air you'd need a TV-tuner, something that has, until now, been unavailable for Apple's popular slate. By the end of September that lack of broadcast television will become just a distant memory with the release of EyeTV Mobile, a £100 (about $163) dongle that connects to the iPad's proprietary port. The tuner will be able to pull in MPEG 2 streams over DVB-T, but won't work with DVB-T2 broadcasts like Freeview HD.

Sprint's Samsung Galaxy S II revealed ahead of launch

We know that the Samsung Galaxy S II Android smartphone will be headed to three of the four major carriers in the US – Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile. Each carrier will be getting their own version of the Galaxy S II, and while AT&T and T-Mobile's versions have only been speculated, it appears that Sprint's version has already been revealed ahead of the launch event. Sprint's version of the Galaxy S II has been confirmed as the Epic Touch 4G and it will feature a larger screen than the original Galaxy S II, with its Super AMOLED display measuring at 4.52".

The Korean automaker has posted a link that leads you to a configurator for the 2012 Azera, and there is a survey posted at the end. Mozilla working on a tablet version of Firefox

Mozilla's Firefox browser is no doubt a popular choice among all the browsers currently available, and even better news for those running on Android Honeycomb tablets as Mozilla revealed today in a blog post that they are working on a version of their browser that has been optimized for tablets. Based on the screenshots it appears that Mozilla has stuck with the somewhat minimalist Honeycomb theme while keeping certain features, such as retaining the trademark Firefox UI like the back button for example.

HP thinking about resurrecting the TouchPad?

The past couple weeks or so there has been a lot of buzz surrounding the HP TouchPad, and why wouldn't there be. After all, the device was cancelled after only less than two months into its release. Since then the tablet has seen a fire sale where it saw its prices drop to $99 for the cheapest option, and let's not forget that Android developers are now working to get an Android ROM running on the device. In an interview with Reuters, head of HP's Personal Systems Group, Todd Bradley, dropped a piece of rather shocking news when he casually mentioned that HP could resurrect the TouchPad.

Asus Eee PC Slider SL101 Full Specs Revealed

Full specifications of the Asus Eee PC Slider SL101 Android tablet with a physical slide-out keyboard have been published on the computer maker's website. As same as many Honeycomb-based tablets on the market, the Slider also incorporates the Nvidia Tegra 2 platform. Tegra's dual-core CPU is clocked at 1.2GHz and is accompanied by 1GB of RAM and 16GB or 32GB of internal Flash memory storage.
The included 25Wh Li-Polymer battery in the 0.68-inch thin 2.1-pound tablet provides up to 8 hours of run time, according to the specifications.

The SL101 weighs 2.1 pounds.

Dior Phone Touch is a droid for the fashion conscious

The small realm of ultra luxury Android smartphones appears to be getting bigger and bigger, folks. The credit for the latest addition to this exclusive club can be given to the fashion powerhouse Christian Dior. While this is not the first take of the company on a mobile phone, it surely is its first touchscreen smartphone. We are not exactly familiar about the Android version which the device is running, but we believe that, on this occasion, it is not the phone's most important feature.

Microsoft details Windows 8 Explorer tweaks, adds ribbon UI

Lots of things are getting tweaked, if not completely overhauled, for Windows 8. That includes the ever-present Windows Explorer. Just like many other Microsoft apps, the file manager will be adopting the slightly more finger-friendly ribbon interface. But don't freak out about your precious screen real estate, the next version of Explorer will actually display more files than Windows 7 could by moving the details pane to the right-hand side and tweaking the padding. The up button has also returned and a slew of new keyboard shortcuts are being introduced.

More iPhone 5x4S pictures leak

The folks over at macpost seem to be on a roll - after revealing the rear cover of the purported iPhone 5x4S prototype last week, they're back this time around with more pictures front of the device instead. Judging by the photographs, it looks just like the current generation iPhone 4, but it bears the N94 markings of the prototype phone, so it's definitely not the iPhone 4. Corroborating with previous reports of an upcoming iPhone 4S model that is said to resemble the iPhone 4 - it looks like this might be it.

2012 Chevrolet Silverado gets slight redesign, WiFi and White Diamond Edition

General Motors has quietly rolled out a mild refresh for the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado. Buyers who lay down the cash for the new pickup will enjoy a slightly reworked nose complete with a chrome mesh grille with a chrome surround on LS and LT trims, and two-wheel drive trucks will feature an aerodynamic front bumper without tow hooks. LTZ trim level pickups will boast a body-color surround, and 20-inch wheels are now available, as well. For 2012, every Silverado with the exception of the Hybrid will come standard with trailer sway control and hill-start assist for a little more functionality and safety.

Snapseed Photo Editing Software for iOS

A lot of Apple mobile products now include cameras, so I find myself taking more photos than before.  When I take a photo with my iPhone 4 or iPad 2 that needs a bit of tweaking, I have to transfer it to my laptop because I have no editing software for those devices.  I recently found an app that looks promising for editing right on my device.  The Snapseed app lets you auto-correct photos with a single tap, but it also has more advanced features.  You can select areas of the image to be corrected or enhanced, add atmosphere to the entire image (Drama, Vintage, Grunge, and Center Focus), add borders, and more.

Florida sued for ticketing motorists that warn others of speed traps

Florida is facing a class-action lawsuit from drivers who have been ticketed for attempting to warn other motorists of hidden speed traps. According to WTSP 10 News, Eric Campbell was recently cited for just that, despite the fact that there is no law against using one's headlights to communicate with other drivers. The officer who ticketed Campbell used Florida State Statute 316.2397, even though the courts ruled that the police were wrongfully applying the law to crack down on vehicle-to-vehicle communication in 2005. Now Campbell wants his $100 ticket refunded and $15,000 in damages.

Speaking at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, Chairman Eric Schmidt reaffirmed Google’s commitment to their struggling TV platform. In fact, Schmidt says Google TV is looking to expand with more partners moving forward, pointing to a limited selection of hardware and software integrated into televisions sets, devices that consumers buy sparingly. With a new build of Google TV in the pipeline, the planned release of the platform in Europe, and a new set of hardware waiting in the wings, the tech giant hopes to make another big push in the coming months.

Samsung announces 4G LTE versions of GALAXY S II, GALAXY Tab 8.9

Samsung quietly unveiled 4G LTE-enabled versions of its popular GALAXY S II smartphone and its forthcoming GALAXY Tab 8.9 tablet this past weekend. As you might expect, these 4G versions offer identical specs compared to their 3G-enabled counterparts, with a few key differences in the S II beyond the addition of an LTE radio, of course. The GALAXY S II LTE will feature a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The GALAXY Tab 8.9 LTE features an 8.9-inch display, a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, an 8.6-millimeter thick case and Samsung's TouchWiz UI atop Honeycomb.

Toshiba Goes Slim for Successor to the Thrive Tablet

Toshiba appears prepared to issue an announcement regarding a followup to the summer release of their first Honeycomb tablet, the Toshiba Thrive, and it could come next week at IFA. The new slate looks to improve on the shortcomings of their previous device, most notably with a svelte new look revealed in renders obtained by Notebook Italia. Featuring a thinner frame with brushed metal accents, little else is known about the new offering aside from the inclusion of  microHDMI, microUSB, and microSD ports revealed in the leaked images.

Supposedly there are some magical Touchpads out there with Android pre-installed on them, but that won't help you load it up your new collectors item. Thankfully the Cyanogen Mod team is hard at work on a port of Google's mobile OS for your HP slate and aiming to claim the bounty on its head. It's still in the extremely early stages. At the moment it does little more than boot up and unlock with the aid of ADB - even the touchscreen isn't working just yet - but it shouldn't be too long before you can swap out webOS with CM7.

After tons of hype, the 2012 Hyundai Veloster finally has its own configurator on Hyundai's website. The 138-horsepower hatch comes with your choice of a six-speed row-your-own-or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic cog box. The three-door hatch clocks in just over $22,000 when you opt for the style and tech packages and the manual trans. Go for top banana with the DCT trans, and you'll be asked to shell out just north of $23K.
