Many rumors that make their rounds on the Internet these days tend to have grounds for confirmation, simply because technology has enabled one working from within a company to be able to grab a snapshot here, or an image there, before releasing such information to the masses in a ninja-like manner. The BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 release date has certainly made its rounds on the rumor mill for some time, with many of them touting a February 2012 release date, but out of the 29 days of the month for this year, just which will be the correct one.

Samsung faces antitrust investigation in Europe over use of mobile patents

. The European Commission announced on Tuesday that it has opened a formal investigation into Samsung's competitive practices. The Commission will assess whether the Korean manufacturer “used certain of its standard essential patent rights to distort competition in European mobile device markets, in breach of EU antitrust rules.” Samsung has used a collection of its patents to launch a series of lawsuits against rival companies, such as Apple. The technology giant maintains, however, that these patents are essential to implementing European mobile telephony standards.

LG A290 with triple-SIM support arrives in Russia in late February for about €75

Dual-SIM phones have been all the rage in many emerging markets for years now. And big phone makers were very late to this game, which at first consisted primarily from unknown Chinese vendors. But time has passed and some of the big names in mobile are slowly warming up to the idea of dual-SIM offerings. But what about triple-SIM phones? This is still a niche at the moment, but it's one LG looks intent to cash in on right from the start. The Korean company is set to launch its first triple-SIM phone, the A290, soon.

Polish politicians don Guy Fawkes Anonymous masks to protest EU counterfeiting agreement

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or ACTA to its friends, is coming under fire in the EU from those who fear it will lead to online censorship. But it has received particular attention from the public of Poland and that has been reflected by some of the nation's politicians. ACTA is a far-reaching agreement. It's designed to harmonize international standards on protecting the rights of those who produce music, movies, and god knows what else, and part of that includes tackling online piracy.

If you happen to be in the market for such a product, you might be interested in checking out Emotiva's airmotiv 4 speakers, which on first glance might seem like a normal set of speakers, but for the speaker enthusiast they might point out to you that the airmotiv 4 appears to be missing a dome tweeter that is commonplace in most speakers. In place of the dome tweeter is a Heil air motion transformer, which instead of pushing air to make sound like most tweeters do, it instead "squeezes" air thanks to its pleated diaphragm.

More dots are being connected for Sony's known slate of 2012 launches. Exactly a week ago we learned that the Sony ST25i Kumquat could launch as the Xperia U and now we're hearing news about the LT22i Nypon. According to a new leak it will be marketed as the Sony Xperia P. That's totally believable considering Sony's 2012 naming scheme introduced following their proposed deal to take over the mobile division of the Sony-Ericsson partnership. The device is supposed to be similar to the Xperia S, except it would have a different processor and a weaker screen.

Qualcomm's upcoming 28nm based Snapdragon SoCs, codenamed Krait, are expected to arrive later this year. But a NenaMark 2 benchmark score on an unidentified device has leaked ahead of launch. In this benchmark, we see this unidentified device, probably just a reference unit, running the MSM8960 processor with the Adreno 225 graphics. The device has a display resolution of 1024 x 600, same as 7-inch tablets but despite the higher resolution, it posts a rather impressive score of 54.90 in NenaMark 2.

To put that number in perspective, we compared it to our own score of the Galaxy S II running the same benchmark.

Apple Appeals ITC Decision to Delay HTC Product Banning Until April

Back in December 2011 Apple won an ITC case against HTC where they sued the Taiwanese smartphone maker for infringing on several of their patents, four to be exact. The courts ruled that only one of those patents were infringed upon by HTC and elected to ban the importation of several devices. The ban wouldn't be administered until April of this year, however, and Apple is not happy with that. With the grace period, HTC plans to remove the infringing feature from their phones which they describe as a minor UI experience that could easily be removed via software updates.

White Samsung Galaxy Note now available in the UK, £538.80 SIM-free

Last week we told you that the white version of Samsung's Galaxy Note Android-powered phone/tablet hybrid would become available in the UK this past Monday, on January 23. And that it did. However, it was only to be found at one retailer, in one physical store. But thankfully that strange exclusivity deal seems to have ended way ahead of the initially projected time frame of February.
That's because the white Samsung Galaxy Note is now also up for grabs at online retailer Clove. The price being asked is a steep £538.80 (not that the Galaxy Note was ever an affordable device, mind you).
